Fairfoods Review 2013

Changes were afoot this year at Fairfoods, because it was the first full year we’ve done without making mail order cakes for Blue Lotus Cakes (which is no longer in operation). We loved working with Chetna from Blue Lotus. Blue Lotus cakes took up a lot of our time so on the positive side, this year we’ve been able to branch out on other projects and experiment with new dishes for our menu.

Below are some events we catered, recipes we liked, new techniques and finally feedback received. One of our favourite new events was the Vegan Cafe and Bake Sale in Exeter, so good news that another one is arranged for 2014 on Saturday 12 April at the Palace Gate Centre, Exeter.

Vegan Fairs: Helped Taunton Vegans to organise Taunton Vegan Fair and produced the booklet given out on the day, a vegan guide to Taunton.

Number of weddings catering for: Seven

Exeter Vegan Pledge: Worked with Exeter Friends for Animals to arrange the 2013 Pledge.

Favourite new techniques learned:
~ Slow bread dough fermentation for homemade pizzas
~ Chinese dumplings (pot stickers)
~ Ravioli

Favourite online recipes tried:
Roast cauliflower salad
Currry sauce – a fruity curry sauce from the Mouthwatering Vegan blog. In general a fantastic blog, well worth a look around.
Sesame and green bean salad – this is the online version, but this recipe comes  from a course we attended on Japanese cookery, at the Vegetarian Cookery School.

Some other events we catered: Vegan Camp, three Plymouth fund raising evenings, Exeter and London Animal Aid fairs, Wellington Vegan Day and EFFA picnic.

Palm oil free focus: We continue to focus on keeping our menu mostly palm oil free. Most of our dishes are palm oil free and we can provide completely palm oil free menus on request.

Vegan Cafe and Bake Sale: Organised the first one of these to take place in Exeter, as part of the Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale. There was a great turn out and it raised over £500 for Fleecehaven Sheep Sanctuary.

Fundraising for badgers: Worked with EFFA to organise a three course roast dinner and talk in Exeter, to raise over £500 for campaigns against the badger cull.

Pop up cafes:
Held these in Exeter, Taunton and Wellington.

Some of the feedback we received:

Clare, I often look at your recipes when my brain runs out of ideas. Never had a recipe go wrong yet. Jo-Ann Brown

Thank you for the amazing food today. We just had our takeaway tea of second helpings and it was sooo good. My toddler loved the red pepper quiche. See you soon xx

Thank you from the very bottom of our hearts to EVERYONE who helped make the Vegan Cafe and Bake Sale such an amazing success today. We are totally overwhelmed by the incredible generosity shown to Fleecehaven. As a tiny, family run charity the amazing sum raised and donated to us really will make a HUGE difference. Thank you, thank you, thank you – you really are a wonderful group and we look forward to seeing many of you again. With love and thanks from us all at Fleecehaven, especially the sheep xx

Thank you for the lovely food you provided for our wedding buffet in Cornwall on June 16th! Everyone loved the food and only four guests were vegan!
